Community Service

Community service is so important. It is an opportunity for you to grow and give back in so many amazing ways with your students and colleagues. One event that will always have a special place in my heart was a community happening that Saint Leo University held every year. Its goal was to give back to the community where Saint Leo University was located. You would show up on the campus very early in the morning and there would be a table with opportunities for you and your students to attend and assist. You could possibly work with animals or children for the day, or help paint a house. There were always many to choose from.

Well, this year there was an opportunity to go to a retreat. So the students and I said this is awesome... let's choose this one. We hopped in the van and arrived at this beautiful parklike retreat. We met the people who maintained and supervised the park and there was even a petting zoo. They showed us around and then said, its time to get to work. We all piled into the back of a pickup truck and began to drive out to a large field, wherein the distance you can see this old big dirty tank. We arrived at the tank and the groundkeeper; said here is your task for the day. We all looked at each other with confusion. The groundskeeper went on to say here is the paint, brushes, and rollers. We had to paint the tank. But... this was no ordinary tank, this was a septic tank!!!! Yuck!!! Haha! We once again all looked at each other and began to laugh... it turned out to be one of the most memorable days in my academic profession. Enjoy the photos below.
